While the fundamental challenges in managing today’s Data Centers have not changed relative to the challenges of the past, a new challenge has emerged. We need to orchestrate a number of technological solutions as we have them at our disposal. This creates complexity, and the critical success factor is in how well we can harmonize the disparate solutions for best results.

While the technologies have changed, the drivers have changed. Today’s business model demands Green IT and enablement to work in secure shared environments using infrastructure as a service. Servers, storage, networks, applications and even desktops can be virtualized using data center solutions, driving down the total cost of ownership (TCO), moving financial institutions into the virtuous cycle of utility computing.

The question, “How do we do more with less?” is age-old, but more pertinent today than ever. Even with global equity markets now out of the doldrums, the events of 2008 provided a wakeup call that efficient use of compute power and bandwidth should always be in style. Lower costs will always equal higher profits. But a combination of volatility, increasingly complex trading algorithms, and latency measured in microseconds makes cutting back on purchases a non-option.

Virtualization, cloud computing, energy efficient processors and bandwidth management are only a few of the techniques that will be at the center of tomorrow’s financial services data center. Finding the right balance between ever changing business requirements and cutting edge technology is no easy task however. In his presentation Kevin will highlight the needs from both sides of the fence in an attempt to create a more clear view of next generation financial services infrastructures.

The door to significant savings in the dysfunctional and monolithic Mission Critical Facilities world is open. Prior to recent years' urgency for low Total Costs of Ownership (TCO) mandates from COO's and CIO's, fear of failure and lack of imagination dictated decisions regarding Data Centers’ locations, design and performance, resulting in higher costs.

Recently, due to the positive effects of the Great Recession, improved long-haul telecommunications and an enhanced environmental awareness, users are doing more with less in remote parts of the world, without yielding their performance or integrity standards. A low-tier solution in some cases and a high-tier one in others for data centers can effectively use the decentralized and geothermal benefits of alternative power for cooling. This is allowing us to build facilities at one half to two thirds the costs of older facilities with future savings that are grabbing owners' attention.

Bowman is responsible for the organization's operations and its project management and construction management assignments, as well as providing services to its clients in all aspects of Mission Critical Data Centers: strategic site selection and evaluation, life-span assessment, total cost of ownership, sustainable design and construction, alternative energy implementation, and commissioning.

Mr. Bowman has more than two decades of experience in the management, leasing, planning, construction, and operation of data centers and related infrastructure projects. He has served as a project manager on trading floor and data center installations in some of the world's most competitive markets, including New York, London, Tokyo, Frankfurt, Paris, and Shanghai. He has managed 50 trading floor and 100 data center installations for such companies as Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, E-Speed, Cantor Fitzgerald, DLJ, Mitsubishi, and Charles Schwab.

As an author, Mr. Bowman has written two books, the first about data center operations and disaster avoidance entitled Business Continuity Planning for Data Centers and Systems: A Strategic Implementation Guide, and his newest about energy options off the traditional grid and alternative power, entitled The Green Guide to Power, Thinking Outside the Grid.

Mr. Bowman is also teaching a class in Energy Sustainability to students in the Master of Science in Real Estate Development program at Columbia University.

Raymond Bernard, Senior Systems Engineer, InMage Systems
Raymond Bernard joined InMage in 2009 as a Senior Systems Engineer. Mr. Raymond has over 17 years of experience in the fields of solution architecture, storage network architecture, and project management systems\integration engineering. Mr. Bernard held senior engineering positions at Dell, McDATA, Storage Networks, Compaq, and Digital Equipment Corp where he helped unlock the promise of networked storage for enterprise customers. Mr. Bernard is an award winning engineer that has had the responsibility of leading IT consulting engagements at major Wall Street firms from a global services perspective.
