Your customers expect a user experience, or UX, of applications that is seamless, instantaneous, and delivers on their needs—no delays, no glitches, and no downtime. They may not know how the application got there; they probably don’t even care, but your IT team does.

To stay ahead, IT developers endeavor to create applications and services that are powerful but simple for customers to use. But regardless of how innovative these applications are, they will never provide a stellar UX without the right infrastructure behind them.

Welcome to hyper-convergent infrastructure.
Response to the demand for more-powerful and successful business service application deployment in the 21st century is driving the adoption of cloud services. According to Gartner’s July 2019 press release, by 2022, 75% of all databases will be deployed or migrated to a cloud platform, with only 5% ever considered for repatriation to on-premises. Depending on where an institution is on its digital transformation journey, it may already have adopted some mix of private and public clouds, as well as an on-premises legacy infrastructure.

Whether this was deliberate and strategically planned or ad hoc, this is defined as a hyper-convergent infrastructure—and either way, it’s a bear.

Any customer UX should only be about accessing “stuff in the cloud” and not the infrastructure that supports it. The customer should never see, understand, or respond to the infrastructure—and that’s just fine. But when ITOps can’t see, understand, or respond to their infrastructure—trouble happens.

Are your legacy monitoring tools slowing you down?
When a problem arises, speed and accuracy are critical for fixing it, but it’s also a massive challenge if the data about that problem isn’t accessible, actionable, or reliable. Legacy monitoring tools are not enough to remediate and resolve outages based on hyper-convergent infrastructures. Why? Because legacy monitoring tools were not designed for the cloud.

According to Gartner’s September 2019 report Prevalence Of Legacy Tools Paralyzes Enterprises’ Ability To Innovate, “legacy toolsets — those with disjointed and outdated offerings (monitoring, alerting, analytics, etc.) and strategies (road map, market approach, etc.) [fail] to provide end-to-end visibility into the digital services that enterprises deliver to customers. This causes lengthened service disruptions, issues finding faults in the system, and poor customer experience, while not supporting the shift to hybrid-cloud environments or new application architectures.”

This means your UX is threatened with inconsistency. What your customers see is unreliable. And unreliable can translate into untrustworthy. And neither unreliable nor untrustworthy is a good perception for a financial institution.

The solution is automation, but there’s a catch.
In a perfect world, problems would be found and fixed before customers were even aware that an issue existed. Predictive capabilities would enable ITOps to proactively identify issues and, ultimately, diagnosing and solving them would be automated.

The good news: this world is already here—but it comes with an essential prerequisite.

Automation starts with data—the right data. The right data that is actionable, providing the context that gives you insights into the root-cause of the issue in real time. Only by gaining full-service visibility and understanding the context of an entire hyper-convergent infrastructure can problems be identified and resolved—and the steps for doing so be automated. This puts you on the path to artificial intelligence for IT operations (AIOps). And you can’t do that with legacy monitoring tools.

So, what should you look for when you replace or consolidate your existing legacy ITOM monitoring tools?

    1. Visibility into your entire hyper-convergent infrastructure—the cloud, servers, network, storage, applications, and services;
    2. Access to actionable data that can bring context and meaning by helping ITOps see how each component works together to support applications and business services; and
    3. Integration and sharing of data in real time that facilitates automation.

In addition, the selection of a replacement that is cloud-native and not simply adapted for the cloud will seamlessly keep the infrastructure that supports critical business services running smoothly.

When ITOps Succeeds, UX Succeeds
The world of ITOps is evolving. Competitive businesses continuously extend their technology footprint to include cloud, virtual machines, microservices, containers, Kubernetes, and more. It’s no longer good enough to provide visibility in the data center. According to Flexera’s 2019 State of the Cloud Report, 84% of enterprises have a multi-cloud strategy, and 58% have a hybrid strategy. So, how can ITops support the complex mesh of clouds, data, and applications needed to provide the UX customers demand?
